The First Wedding Fair of 2015 for The Guildhall, Salisbury

The Guildhall, Salisbury will showcase over thirty wedding suppliers on Sunday 1 February from 11am until 3.30pm at its first Wedding Fair for 2015.

The venue hosts weddings throughout the year and has become one of Salisbury’s premier wedding venues. This is the third year The Guildhall has organised wedding fairs and welcomed those ready to walk down the aisle.

Salisbury’s annual Charter Fair will visit the City from 21 – 23 October in the Market Place and Guildhall Square.  The funfair will be officially opened at 12 noon on 21 October by The Mayor of the City of Salisbury, Councillor Mrs Penny Brown and will run for three days.

City Clerk for the Council, Reg Williams said, “Once again we look forward to welcoming the annual Charter Fair to Salisbury which has become an eagerly anticipated family tradition for many.”

Salisbury gardeners receive awards

Salisbury gardeners were recognised on 17 September at Salisbury City Council’s annual awards ceremony for its Allotment, Gardens and Scarecrow competitions.

The Mayor of Salisbury, Councillor Mrs Jo Broom, was delighted to present certificates to winners of all the competitions starting with the Scarecrow competition which she herself judged. The winning scarecrow was entered by Robert and Matthew Short and was praised for its inventive design that even included bird feeders for legs!

Salisbury City Council is delighted to announce that Salisbury was awarded three Silver Gilt awards at the recent South & South East in Bloom ceremony. South & South East in Bloom is the regional awards category for Britain in Bloom.

This summer Salisbury entered the Small City category in the awards for the first time. Queen Elizabeth Gardens was entered into the Park of the Year category and the Crematorium Grounds into the Cemetery of the Year category.

Purple flag week runs from 27 September until the 5 October and to celebrate Salisbury City Council, Wiltshire Council and the Salisbury Business Improvement District have organised a host of markets.

The Purple Flag is an accreditation process similar to Green Flag Award for parks and Blue Flag for beaches. Purple Flag status is awarded to town centres that meet or surpass the standards of excellence in managing the evening and night-time economy with a positive initiative that indicates an entertaining, diverse, safe and enjoyable night out. Salisbury was first awarded Purple Flag in 2012 and again in 2013.

Following the huge success of our first two Teenage Markets, Salisbury City Council & The Unit are now planning their third market to take place on Sunday 26 October from 11am – 3pm in the Market Place, Salisbury.

The Teenage Market has become hugely popular and offers a unique opportunity by providing a FREE platform for young people under the age of 30 to be entrepreneurial, try out new business ideas and sell creative products. Items sold include anything from home baked delicious treats, intricately designed T-shirts, hand crafted ceramics, leather jackets and exquisite jewellery to beautifully illustrated cards and lots more.

Sid Lewis celebrates 60 years of trading on the Salisbury Charter Market!

Last week Sid Lewis celebrated sixty years of trading at Salisbury Charter Market. Sid established his business in 1954 selling towels and bedding, and still sells the same today. For two decades he made the journey from London to Salisbury, leaving at 2am to make sure he got to the popular market in time. In the early 1970s he moved to Bournemouth and gradually took on running markets as well as being a market trader.

Reed Bed Restoration

Work is now underway on the restoration of the reed bed to the north of the Avon Valley Nature Reserve; the next part of the overall conservation and enhancement project that saw the boardwalk replaced and improved over the summer.

As with the boardwalk, the work has been jointly organised and funded by Salisbury City Council, the Environment Agency, Natural England and Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.

Double Playday success for the City

To celebrate the national Playday on Wednesday 6 August, Salisbury City Council in partnership with local residents hosted its first Family Playday event at the Friary Community Centre and surrounding grounds and then on Thursday 7 August hosted the annual Playday at Wyndham Park.

On Playday thousands of children and their families get out to play at hundreds of community events across the UK.
