The Crematorium Project is now on course to be completed by the end of January 2014. Cremations are taking place as normal within the crematory at the Crematorium with services being held at an alternative venue. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the Crematorium Office on 01722 333632.
During this period the Crematorium will be operating at half capacity and it will not be possible to hold funeral services in its Chapel. During the refurbishment the Holy Redeemer Church, Bishopdown will be offered in place of the Crematorium Chapel along with the Devizes Road Cemetery Chapel.
Following the funeral service and committal at the alternative venue, the coffin will then be brought to the Crematorium by the Funeral Director as normal and received into the care of the Crematorium Authority for cremation. Unfortunately the family will not be able to attend this due to the works being carried out in the Chapel and elsewhere within the building.
Salisbury City Council apologises for the inconvenience caused during this time but are hoping that the residents of Salisbury and surrounding areas will understand that these works are all essential at this time. Should you have any queries whatsoever then please do contact the Crematorium office on 01722 333632.

Salisbury Crematorium was opened by the Bishop of Sherborne the Right Rev. V. J. Pike in 1960. It lies on the North East outskirts of the city just off the A30..
The Crematorium occupies a site of approximately 3 hectares, with the Grounds and Garden of Remembrance laid out in a mixture of formal and informal landscaping. The beautiful mature trees, herbaceous planting, rose beds and shrubberies give an air of peace and tranquillity to the surroundings and are a haven for quiet contemplation and remembrance.
Salisbury is also the proud owner of two “Champion Trees” one of which, a St Lucie Cherry (Prunus Mahaleb) is in the grounds of the Crematorium in the corner of the car park area. A Champion Tree is the tallest, oldest or largest example of its kind known in a given region. The most spreading tree or one with an impressively thick trunk can also be registered as a champion tree.
The Chapel has seating for approximately 100 people and is dedicated for services of all religions or creed. However, if a religious service is not required, it is possible to just sit quietly for a while, or have a family member or friend say a few words. The cross can also be removed if desired.
The Crematorium has a resident organist who will play any kind of music to suit requirements of the family or, alternatively, a CD can be played. If a CD is chosen to be played all we ask is that they are delivered to the Crematorium one working day before the intended cremation service so the organist can check them and make sure they work on our system.
Services are held every 45 minutes. This is designed to allow up to 25 minutes for the service in the Chapel and a 20 minute time to enable the family and friends to meet on the Colonnade and view any floral tributes afterwards and leave ready for a following service. It is possible, if required, to book a double time slot; this is particularly useful and indeed advised, if you are expecting a very large number of attendees or if a longer funeral service time is required.
New crematoria built in this country today offer the same capacity for seating in their Chapels/Ceremony Halls as offered here in Salisbury. If a larger attendance is expected it is strongly advised that the main part of the service should take place at a larger church or venue followed by a family only committal at the Crematorium. The Funeral Director should advise you of this when making the arrangements.
The Chapel at the Crematorium can also be used for funeral services prior to burial in the adjoining London Road Cemetery or elsewhere.
Once a date and time has been booked, all the legalities and funeral arrangements will be managed by the Crematorium Manager and staff along with your appointed Funeral Director. If you wish to have a guided tour of the facility please telephone the Crematorium Office on (01722) 333632 to arrange a mutually convenient time.
Please see the below the Useful Downloads section which may assist you if required.
If desired after the service the Cremation Ashes may be scattered in our Gardens of Remembrance or Interred in either of our two cemeteries. Alternatively they may be removed by the Funeral Director where other arrangements can be made with them as to their final resting place. It is advised to discuss your wishes with your chosen Funeral Director when arranging the funeral as once Cremation Ashes have been scattered there is no way they can be retrieved so it is important that you make the right decision
There are various memorials available at the Crematorium as a lasting tribute; these include the Book of Remembrance, Wall Plaques or Memorial Tablets, Memorial Vases and bulb planting. Please see the below link for the current Price List and list of Memorials Available at the Crematorium.
Plastic Vases are provided for people wishing to bring flowers in memory of a loved one. Cut flowers can be placed along the Colonnade and outside the Book of Remembrance. There is usually a selection of vases on the Colonnade by the water tap and waste bin.
If you desire a special memorial other than these then the Parks Department offer the opportunity to arrange a Memorial Bench to be positioned in one of the Gardens around the Salisbury City.
The Crematorium Manager and staff are more than happy to advise you on this or alternatively you can telephone the Parks Department on (01722) 324860.
The grounds are open every day of the year from sunrise to sunset and the Book of Remembrance Chapel is open every day between 10am and 4:30pm.
The Crematorium grounds are maintained directly by the Salisbury City Council Parks Department. All enquiries regarding the upkeep of the Garden of Remembrance, Roses, Shrubs etc. please contact the Parks Department on: (01722) 342860.
